Holding a slope
A retaining wall is a structural element, not a decorative one. What decides whether it is still straight in fifteen years is entirely invisible once the job is finished: a compacted base below frost-affected depth, clean drainage aggregate behind the block, a drain that actually outlets somewhere, and backfill placed and compacted in lifts rather than dumped in one go.

Terracing instead of one tall wall
On a steep lot, two or three shorter terraced walls are frequently better than a single tall one. Each wall does less work, the engineering stays simpler, the planting areas created between them are genuinely usable, and the result looks far less like a fortification. It also lets you build in stages if budget matters.

Getting a level, usable patio out of a sloped yard is mostly about deciding where the flat area belongs and how you get to it. Steps need consistent rise, a solid base, and drainage that does not send water across them in winter.
